Muslims today - and the authenticity of the Bible

Muslims today follow unfounded claims of so called Islamic scholars and TV preachers that the Bible had been changed, corrupted or some parts had gone lost. This is not only the biggest misunderstanding of the scriptures but also a big insult on Christianity mounting up to blasphemy. The Holy Qur'an does not support such claims whatsoever:

Surah Ahl-e-Imran 3,199              (Yusuf Ali)

And there are, certainly, among the People of the Book, those who believe in Allah, in the revelation to you, and in the revelation to them, bowing in humility to Allah: They will not sell the Signs of Allah for a miserable gain! For them is a reward with their Lord, and Allah is swift in account.

Dear reader, if you believe in Allah, and in his revelations, if you bow down in humility before him, you are a “true Muslim” who joins the uncorrupted people of the book in faith. Now, as true Muslims, we must believe in Isa, son of Mary, as the Holy Qur'an confirms the Tawrat, Zabur and Injiil (part of the Holy Bible) revealed to Moses, David and Jesus. (Musa, Dawood & Isa)

Surah    Al – Maiidah      5, 46

Subsequent to them, we sent Isa (Jesus), the son of Mary, confirming the previous scripture, the Tawrat. We gave him the Injiil (Gospel), containing guidance and light, and confirming the previous scriptures, the Tawrat, and augmenting its guidance and light, and to enlighten the righteous.

According to the Holy Quran, all Muslims must believe in- and know the earlier authentic books because it is called the word of Allah. These books are a “light and guidance” to fully understand Islam, Christianity and humanity. The Qur’an namely endorses the Tawrat of Moses, the Zabur of David, the Injiil of Jesus, and they all have been part of the Jewish scriptures and the Christian Bible from the beginning till today.  link: Evidence for God's unchanging word

Surah Al Imran 3, 3

He has revealed to you, Mohammed the Qur’an in truth and in agreement with reality, corroborating and authoratively validating the authentic books previously revealed, the Tawrat, Injil, (the books revealed to Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus) respectively)

Although the Holy Qur'an is very clear in text and meaning concerning the validity, authenticity of the Holy Tawrat, the Holy Zabur, and the Holy Injiil, Muslims often make claims that the Bible is unreliable.

Some say that men have changed the text over the course of time. This is a very dangerous statement, as we are accusing Almighty Allah of not being able to preserve his words. Of course, this claim is baseless, because no one can give any historic evidence that some had gone lost in time, whatsoever.
The text of the Bible can be traced back almost two thousand years to the oldest available manuscripts. None of the books have been altered in its original text throughout history and all are all available today in its original form as displayed in the British Museum in London.

The following complete Bible manuscripts predate the Holy Qur'an by 250 years:

These are the oldest 2 complete ancient Bibles in the original Greek language and alongside other originals have been translated carefully in any modern language. They are available everywhere today and accessible in the internet.

The exact same scriptures had been available in the hands of the Jews and Christians for hundreds of years at the time of Mohammed (pbuh) as the Holy Qur'an confirms:

Surah Al – Baqarah        2, 41       (Sahih International)

And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is already with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear only Me.

How could they possibly have been changed when Christianity and the Bible at that time had already spread through many places of the world? Even if a small part were changed, it would certainly have been noticed. As a historic fact, long before the lifetime of Mohammed (pbuh) there were manuscripts of the Bible available in various languages. They were copied and distributed everywhere, so that it would have been impossible to collect them and change all of them including the original language manuscripts at the same time?

Although it goes around the world of our Muslim minds like an absolute truth, there is no mention in the Holy Qur’an, or in any Hadith (traditions) that the authentic Tawrat, Zabur, or the Holy Injiil had been lost, exchanged, altered, shortened or even outdated, either before or after the Quranic revelations, whatsoever.  If we keep claiming it, we make Allah to be a liar in what he revealed to the Holy Prophet (pbuh).

No, no proof of corruption can be found - in fact the Qur’an itself says that no one can change His words when referring to those scriptures!!! This remains the biggest historic misunderstanding among us Muslims till today. It is equal to insulting Allah himself.

Surah Al- An’am                6, 115  (Yusuf Ali)

The Word of thy Lord does find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: none can change His Words: for He is the one who hears and knows all.

Interestingly in this context, the Quran even exhorts the Jews and Christians to observe the Tawrat, and to follow the Injiil, mot just to read it but to act upon it in face of the many who disbelieve:

Surah Al Ma’idah 5, 68   (Sahih International)

Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord." And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.

If any of the earlier scriptures in the hands of the Christians at the time of Mohammed (pbuh) had been changed then the following Qur’anic statements would be meaningless as well:

Surah Al – Ma’idah        5, 47       (Shakir)

And the followers of the Injiil should have judged by what Allah revealed in it; and whoever did not judge by what Allah revealed, those are they that are the transgressors.

How would Allah judge the Christians of the time of Mohammed (pbuh) by the Injiil he had revealed to them if they hadn’t the authentic scripture in their hands? This command would be futile had the manuscripts been changed. The reality is that the Bible is Allah’s unchangeable written Word.  As it was before the rise of Islam, so it is today, in its original condition.

Some of us simply ignore the earlier books, because they think the Holy Qur'an, as the latest revelation would supersede, substitute, overwrite, replace or summarize the earlier books. What an error, when the same Holy Qur'an exhorts every Muslim to treat all revelations of any prophet at any time equally since Allah does not make any distinction between any of them….

Surah  Al Baqra 2, 136    (Pickthall)

Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered.

What if this still leaves open the question of whether the Bible is superseded, annulled or replaced by the Qur’an?

What does the Qur’an itself say about this idea?

Surah Fatir, 35:31             (Sahih International)

And that which we have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], of the Book is the truth, confirming what was before it. Indeed, Allah, of His servants, is acquainted and seeing.

These passages speak about the Qur’an confirming, verifying in contrast to superseding, overriding or replacing the earlier books of the Bible.  In other words, these verses are not saying that believers should set aside the early revelation and only study the latter revelation. No, we should study and obey the earlier revelation as much as the later one’s.

In regards to the end times, also Isa clearly says three times, that the universe would vanish, but never his words. So strong was his believe, that all recorded about him would prevail through the ages of time till the resurrection day. Do you think he was in error, or that he lied?

Injiil,       Matthew 24:35                 (NIV)

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

We all, whether we are Jews, Christians, Muslims, or any human being should believe in Isa’s words, the Injiil, in Allah, his angels, the Prophets, the holy books and the judgment day, because he, the Almighty is trustworthy.

Surah An Nisa   4, 136   (Sahih International)

O you, who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.

Professor Faouzi Arzouni, Lebanese Arab Scholar, grown up in Senegal

Whoever does not believe has gone astray, or is in error. Many of a ordinary Pakistani Muslim claims to believe in 124’000 prophets. However, they are not able to name the 40 Prophets exampled in the Qur’an, nor the 72 prophets of the Bible. Usually, we give the above reference from the Qur'an to prove: “We believe that the Tawrat, Zabur and the Injiil are the Word of God.” And: “…without believing all the 4 holy books we are not Muslims.”

Now, even saying “We believe these books” is not a valid statement. It is the same as someone presenting his child a gift packed in a very beautiful box. Later on the child throws out the valuable gift and plays with the box. It is an empty box-, and yes it is an empty belief. Similarly, we Muslim do the same with the claim: “We believe that the Bible is the Word of God” but we either don’t know, don't want to read or don’t want to believe what the Bible teaches.  This kind of faith does not make any difference in any person. It does not make us ‘true Muslims.’ It makes as simply a hypocrite.

For this reason the Holy Qur'an threatens even a severe punishment in hell for those Muslims, who deny the validity of all scriptures or do lie about them as we read in the following verse:

Surah Ghafir      40, 70-72             (Muhsin Khan)

70. Those who deny the Book and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,

71. When the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged

 72. In boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame]
