The Names & attributes of Isa, son of Mary in the Qur'an:

Surah Ahl-e- Imran 3, 45               (Muhsin Khan)

Remember when the angels said, “O Miriam!  Verily Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word from Him, His name will be Masih Isa (Messiah Jesus) the son of Miriam, held in honor in this world and in the Hereafter, and he will be one of those who are near to Allah....

Injil,       1 Timothy 2:5     (NIV)

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,

Of all the major religions in the world, Islam is the only non-Christian faith that recognizes Isa. Within the pages of the Qur'an is a distinctly Islamic portrayal of Isa. Three of its Surahs, Al-Imran, Al-Maida and Mariam are so named because of their references to Isa and his work. There are about ninety verses spread across fifteen Surahs of the Qur'an that refer to Isa and 17-25 times Isa is explicitly mentioned by name.

Professor Faouzi Arzouni, Lebanese Arab Scholar, grown up in Senegal

Like Allah is known to have 99 glorious names and attributes, so Isa has many names too. They are numerous in all four of the authentic Muslim Holy books. We have found 24 beautiful names, in Arabic, although there are many more in the Injiil, the Zaboor, Ambian and the Tawrat. They are exclusively attributed to Isa, son of Mary, and not to any other of the prophets.
We have highlighted them here on this page to look at it from a Qur'anic- and biblical perspective.

They are here for you to read, to look them up in the books in your preferred language and to memorize and recite for your personal edification.  We have numbered them in order of my own preference of importance:

1. Isa - Jesus – Yeshua - Yessu

Surah Al Imran 3, 52        (Muhsin khan)

Then when Isa came to know of their (peoples) disbelief, he said, “Who will be my helpers in Allah’s cause.  The disciples said, “We are the helpers of Allah; we believe Allah and bear witness that we are Muslims (those who submit).

Injil,       Matthew 1, 21   (NIV)

21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.

Injil,       Luke 2:21             (NIV)

Injil,       John 19:19           (NIV)

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the jews.

Injil,       Acts 3, 16            (NIV) 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

Injil,       Philippians 2:9-11            (NIV)

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

to the glory of God the Father.

2. Al Masih – The Messiah – The Christ

They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

Injil,       Matthew 1, 16   (KJV)

And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Injil,       Luke 2, 11            (KJV)

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

How can he do all this?” 57 So the people were very unhappy because of what he was doing.

But Jesus said, “Prophets are honored by everyone, except the people of their hometown and their own family.” 58 And because the people did not have any faith, Jesus did not work many miracles there.

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go.

Injil,       Matthew 12, 17-18 (CEV) 17 So God’s promise came true, just as Isaiah the prophet had said,

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

20 God’s power was at work in Christ when God raised him from the dead and sat him at God’s right side in the heavens, 21 far above every ruler and authority and power and angelic power, any power that might be named not only now but in the future. 22 God put everything under Christ’s feet and made him head of everything in the church, 23 which is his body. His body, the church, is the fullness of Christ, who fills everything in every way.

Injil,       Hebrews 12:2    (CEV)

44 Jesus said to them, “While I was still with you, I told you that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Books of the Prophets and in the Psalms had to happen.”

Injil,       Luke 24:44           (NIV)

Surah Ahl-e- Imran 3, 59               (Yusuf Ali)

The similitude of Jesus before Allah is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, and then said to him: "Be". And he was.

Injil,       1st Corinthians 15, 45-48               (CEV)

45 The first man was named Adam, and the Scriptures tell us that he was a living person. But Jesus, who may be called the last Adam, is a life-giving spirit. 46 We see that the one with a spiritual body did not come first. He came after the one who had a physical body. 47 The first man was made from the dust of the earth, but the second man came from heaven. 48 Everyone on earth has a body like the body of the one who was made from the dust of the earth. And everyone in heaven has a body like the body of the one who came from heaven.

Injil,       1 Corinthians 15:22         (NIV)

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

Injil,       Romans 5:12-15                (CEV)

12 Adam sinned and that sin brought death into the world. Now everyone has sinned, and so everyone must die. 13 Sin was in the world before the Law came. But no record of sin was kept, because there was no Law. 14 Yet death still had power over all who lived from the time of Adam to the time of Moses. This happened, though not everyone disobeyed a direct command from God, as Adam did.

In some ways Adam is like Christ who came later. 15 But the gift that God was kind enough to give was very different from Adam’s sin. That one sin brought death to many others. Yet in an even greater way, Jesus Christ alone brought God’s gift of kindness to many people.

19. Mufaddal - Preferred

Surah The cow 2, 253

Of those messengers, we (God) preferred some over others. Some Allah spoke to, and he raised some in degree. He brought `Īsā son of Mary the clear signs, and aided him with the Holy Spirit.

Injil,        Hebrews 7:22  (NIV)

Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.

Injil,       Hebrews 8:6      (NIV)

But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

Injil,       Hebrews 1:4-6  (NIV)

4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”?

20.  Shaheed – Witness

Surah Al-Ma'ida               5:117

I told them only what you commanded me: ‘Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.' I was a witness over them while I remained among them, and when you made me die, you became the watcher over them. And you are witness over everything.

Surah an Nisa    4, 159                    (Sahih International)

And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in Jesus before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.

Injil,       Revelation 1:5                   (CEV)

May kindness and peace be yours from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness.

Jesus was the first to conquer death, and he is the ruler of all earthly kings.

Christ loves us, and by his blood he set us free from our sins.

Injil,       2 Timothy 4:1-3                 (CEV)

4 When Christ Jesus comes as king; he will be the judge of everyone, whether they are living or dead. So with God and Christ as witnesses, I command you 2 to preach God’s message. Do it willingly, even if it isn’t the popular thing to do. You must correct people and point out their sins. But also cheer them up, and when you instruct them, always be patient. 3 The time is coming when people won’t listen to good teaching. Instead, they will look for teachers who will please them by telling them only what they are itching to hear.

21. Mu'ayyad bi Rūh ul-Qudus - Aided by the Holy Spirit – Holy Spirit led.

Surah Al Ma’idah             5, 110    (Sahih International)

The Day when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Pure Spirit I aided you with the Holy Spirit, and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, "This is not but obvious magic."

Injil,       Luke 4, 1              (CEV)

When Jesus returned from the Jordan River, the power of the Holy Spirit was with him, and the Spirit led him into the desert.

22.  La'ilmu lis saa'ati – Sign of the Hour of Judgment

And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming) of the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow ye me: this is a Straight Way.

Injil,       2 Timothy 4:1     (CEV)

When Christ Jesus comes as king, he will be the judge of everyone, whether they are living or dead. So with God and Christ as witnesses, I command you….

Injil,       1 Thessalonians 1:10      (CEV)

They also tell how you are waiting for his Son Jesus to come from heaven. God raised him from death, and on the Day of Judgment Jesus will save us from God’s anger.

Injil        Acts 17:31            (CEV)

He has set a day when he will judge the world’s people with fairness. And he has chosen the man Jesus to do the judging for him. God has given proof of this to all of us by raising Jesus from death.

Injil, John 5:27   (CEV)

And he has given his Son the right to judge everyone, because he is the Son of Man.

23.  The Holy Son

Surah Al Miriam              19, 19    (Yusuf Ali)

He said: "Nay, I am only a messenger from thy Lord, (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son.

Anbian,                Isaiah 9, 6            (CEV)

6 A child has been born for us.
We have been given a son
    who will be our ruler.
His names will be
Wonderful Advisor
    and Mighty God,
Eternal Father
    and Prince of Peace.

Injil,       Colossians 1, 13                (NIV)

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness

And brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.

This brief presentation in this chapter gives us a short overview of the various names and descriptions used for `Īsā in the Qur'an. It is not exhaustive; it does not cover all the many references to `Īsā in the Qur’an under each heading. A much larger book would be needed for such an undertaking. However, it does provide one or more examples of each of the different names and descriptions used of `Īsā so as to give the reader an accurate picture of how the Qur’an uses each term and how the Injiil completes its meaning in the English language. Several of these descriptions are unique to and used of no one else. It is our hope that after reading this, both Muslims and Christians will be motivated to go on and read for themselves what the Qur'an says about `Īsā Al Masih as well as the many other topics.  (see Qur'an )
